The heavy fog we encountered on the way here last night and which was still a pea souper when we went to bed, had lifted this morning and we took a drive down to the shore of Lake Michigan for a look. Sheboygan is a pretty place with nice parks along the water and a largish river running through the centre of the town. We took some photos along the lovely waterway at the mouth of the river and then returned to the highway and headed for Milwaukee.
Got there about noon and drove straight to the Harley Davidson Museum which has been built on reclaimed land in the old dock area - a very impressive building! There was a car rally about to set off from the car park and we had a quick look at some fine machines before entering the museum.
Despite all the Harley jokes that are always about this was some museum - two floors of the complete history of the company and a display of every model ever produced! It was very interesting and we spent a long time seeing it all.
After a snack at the cafe we headed back to the car to find the fog rolling in again and by the time we had driven along the shore of the lake we could only see a couple of hundred meters ahead! We stopped and had a walk along the Veterans Memorial Park and then jumped in the car to head for Chicago.
Greg copped a bad day for his driving turn - fog, which cleared slowly, then heavy rain and worst of all some thick traffic. We had to stick to minor highways into the Chicago area because we didn't have a toll pass and so the going was pretty slow, with hundreds of sets of traffic lights!
We hadn't booked any accommodation and a quick internet search showed prices pretty steep and with parking at a premium in the city we planned to stay out nearer O'Hare airport and use the motel shuttle to get to the railway station at the airport.
So we booked a place that looked a ways off the airport and when we got there it was in a pretty barren area with very few eateries etc., but we checked in and were pretty disappointed with the state of the rooms but we decided to stay the night and try somewhere else tomorrow! This was the first place we had been disappointed with - all the other motels have been great.
So tomorrow we check out Chicago proper - it's going to be hot and humid, but there seems to be lots to see and do.
