It was about 250 miles to Orlando from Talahassee and we made it by early afternoon and were immediately hit with the heat and humidity. Only about 85F but with such high moisture that it feels like you are carrying a weight on your body.
We checked out a few hotels - the place is full of holiday makers - and found one in Kissimmee not far from the theme parks, that was quite reasonably priced and had vacancies. Got the usual American double ie 2 queen sized beds and booked in for 4 nights to give us time to see all the action.
The area is a summer holiday mecca for hundreds of thousands of Americans as well as overseas tourists and they all come to brave the weather and see Disney World and all its parks and also Universal Studios.
Our hotel is pretty big - 4,000 plus rooms - and is packed out with families all doing the same thing.
We had a quiet afternoon and then wandered down the main drag to a steakhouse for a meal and a drink. Can't get over how cheap the beer is here in America. You can buy six-pack of full strength for as little as US$4.50, and get it at any servo or deli!
We checked out the shuttle times and found we could get one free from our hotel at 8.00am so tomorrow will be an early start.
