There was a huge community "Monster Auction/Garage Sale" today to raise money for a “Cat Scan Suite” for their hospital. We had a great time looking at an interesting array of offerings, from furniture, appliances, farm equipment, dishes, and even the kitchen sink. I enjoyed the nice artwork and there were silent auction opportunities for activities. We knew we couldn't buy anything, but it was entertaining. The auctioneer mentioned The Antiques Road Show several times.
Then we went shopping and Bob found an “All Black” type of rugby shirt. The country is absolutely crazy about their rugby team. The real jerseys cost over $140, so this is a cheap imitation. I’ll get a photo the first time he wears it.
Then we indulged in some Fish and Chips, or as they say here, “Fush and Chups.” They were authentic and not at all good for us, but delicious.
In order to work off some fat grams, we took a hike along the shoreline of Lake Wanaka. The town sits on the edge of the beautiful Roy’s Bay, and there is a hiking and biking trail that goes around the bay. Lake Wanaka is very deep, 28 miles long and very blue.
Along the side walk near the city center someone created an interesting project for the millennium. She lined up tiles, one for each year, and she wrote significant happenings on certain years. Wonder if she is a history teacher? It was great to walk along the tiles and read the timeline.
It was a beautiful Saturday afternoon and we saw many families enjoying the parks and the water and we even saw two weddings. A helicopter delivered one bride to a hillside next to a hotel. Not as unusual as you’d imagine, because there are heli flights from here for skiing and sightseeing, why not for weddings, too?
We returned to our campsite in time for me to take a photo of Bob at our picnic table, in order to show the view from the Aspiring Campervan Park.
