Claire's Travels
Well today we made our way to Rotorua - also known as Rotten Rua due to the smell of the place. Due to the sulphur it constantly smells of rotten eggs - delightful!!
On our way we stopped at a gold mine that is still in use. Unfortunatley we werent allowed to go down it...which is probably a good thing as we would have all gone crazy trying to find a nugget to help us pay our way around the country!!
We also stopped for a walk along the gorge which was really pretty and walked through an old train tunnel which was a km long. Left like something out of a scary film as it was barely lit.
That night we went to a Maori Village called Tamaki. We were picked up by a guy called Eden and he announced that we had to pick one of the guys on the bus to be our chief for the night. Very kindly one of ours stepped forward. Go Milo!
The village was amazing! We were greeted by Maoris dressed in traditional dress which isnt very much! A little loin cloth for the men! They all had face painting and ran around with spears - it was great!
They performed a concert of traditional song and dance and ended with the Haka. I really do love the Haka! We then had a bit of a feast - roast lamb and chicken with vegetables and stuffing - so good!!! It was a really good night!!
