Claire's Travels
Hi Everyone!
Well for the last 4 days we have been on the Bottom Bus, which takes you to the southern tip of New Zealand. I've already mentioned Dunedin in my previous journal entry.\
From there we headed to Curio Bay, which is within the Catlins. We stopped off at Nugget Point at walked to the lighthouse. To be honest the weather wasnt exactly the best...so it ended up being a quick walk there, take a few photos and then a quick walk back to the bus!
We then moved onto a beach where you can spot Sea Lions. So off we walked down this beach until a huge Sea Lion suddenly appeared infront of us! Apparently these guys can run at 25k per hour which would basically out run us. At this point I thought it wise to back off a little. I had to make sure that there were a few people between me and the Sea Lion.
Near where we were staying that night, there is a beach that yellow eyed penguins live on. Apparently you are meant to see loads there...we only saw 2 and unfortunately they were dots in the distance. I dont think they were impressed with the weather either!
The follwoing day we headed to Invercargill. Here we stopped at a Sheep Shearing museum which was brilliant! The guy who runs it used to be a shearer but has now retired. He informed us that top shearers can make millions of dollars within a very short space of time. For example, a guy he used to work for, made a fair bit of money and was able to buy an expensive house on a street with 35 other expensive houses. He turned around and said that he would stop shearing once he owned all 36 houses on the street. A few years later he owned them all....So myself and Tash have decided to track down this guy. Apparently he isnt married, and ask him very nicely if we could have one of his houses as he surely doesnt need them all!
Our next stop was a working farm where they shear the sheep. The guy who owned the farm was great! I attempted to sort out the sheep from the shaved to those still with wool, as they ran through a gate. I'll happily own up and say I was pretty pants at it, but I was scared that I would hurt their heads as they ran full pelt into the gate. Good fun all the same!
That night we stayed in Te Anau which was really pretty. We had a kitchen in our room which was excting so we cooked oursleves a really nice meal!
The next day (yesterday) we headed for Milford Sound, which is meant to be one of the most beautiful places in the whole of New Zealand. We woke up to snow which wasnt an overly good start, but the bus arrived and off we went. To get to Milford, you have to go up through the mountains. This sounds idillic until you start noticing all of the avalance warning signs, telling you that you can not stop until you are safely out of these areas. Obviously this becomes a little more worrying when the bus driver has to constantly stop the bus to put the chains back on the wheels as they have been flung off! You will be delighted to know that we did make it through!
We boarded our boat which was going to take us around Milford Sound. Thankfully the weather had really improved so the views were great! I can imagine it being spectacular during the summer months! During the tour we stopped off at the underwater obversatory. Due to the salt water and fresh water mix they have in Milford, sea creatures that you would normally find at 60m + below the surface, are found at just 8m.
After the boat ride, we headed back to Queenstown. It was quite nice just to chill on the bus for a couple of hours after the hectic last week or so we had just had!
We are off to Christchurch tomorrow, and hopefully flying off to Sydney on the 27th, just got to confirm our tickets once we get there.
Chao for now! x x x
