We got up this morning and got ready for our whale watching trip. Shorts - check, suncream - check, sun hat - check. We were all ready to go when we opened the curtains and went outside to find high winds and rain. Damn!
As we went down to the whale-way station I was a little nervous as I get seasick and the water was very choppy. When we got there we found our trip had been cancelled :-( We rescheduled for 4pm in the hope that the sea might calm and so had a whole day to fill.
We headed down to the peninsula to see some more seals. You could walk on the rocks with these seals although you have to keep at least 10m away. We walked around the peninsula and saw the very choppy sea (eek!) whilst keeping an eye on the tide so we didn't get trapped. It made for a blustery walk but we saw several seals at close quarters. Finally, we sat quietly in the rocks watching 3 seals as they woke up. Suddenly, a cough came from within the bushes right behind us. Argh! There was a seal lying about a meter behind us! We got up and moved slowly away only to find several more along our path. Who would've thought to look in the bushes for sleeping seals? Luckily they were very docile and didn't seem to think we had invaded their space!
We headed to the i-site to book accommodation and trips for our next stop, Franz Josef, where we are going to go up into the glacier in a helicopter (weather permitting!). Next, we went back to our room for an exciting lunch of cuppa soup, bread and cheese.
We had a lazy afternoon, I had a snooze as I'm feeling a little under the weather, and Claire chilled out, and then we headed back to the whale-way to see if our trip was on.
The trips were running this afternoon but with a 'strong seasickness warning'. I don't like boats at the best of times so this didn't fill me with joy, particularly as I was already feeling under the weather. In the end I decided not to go but told Claire to go without me as I didn't want her to miss out.
Claire really enjoyed the trip but said it was very rough and I would've hated it. Of the 30 odd people who went only Claire and one other guy didn't get sick! However she had a great time and saw 3 sperm whales, hundreds of dusky dolphins, 2 common dolphins, a seal and an albatross. I enjoyed looking at the pictures when she got back! Apparently the waves were crashing over the side, the front and the back of the boat. Eek!
This evening we treated ourselves to a very nice meal. Claire was brave and tried mussels for the first time in a seafood chowder and I was less brave and opted for the salmon. We have a long driving day tomorrow so we're having an early night!

Jenefer Thomas That seal experience on the peninsula sounds wonderful. Shame about the very rough seas!
