Tonight we're sad because we've arrived in Christchurch which means we're at the end of our holiday :-( We've had an amazing time though and still one day left, hurrah!
This morning we woke up early to a huge thunderstorm. After a couple of extra hours sleep we awoke to find the weather had cleared and we had bright sunshine. Woohoo! We got up and ready and packed the car.
First stop was the Moeraki Boulders. These are huge boulders on the beach that look like they've just been dropped from space (in actual fact they are hard volcanic rock that was in the sandstone cliffs. The sandstone around has eroded and left spheres of volcanic rock on the beach). I have been desperate to see the boulders and so I was very excited! They were totally awesome and the perfect opportunity for a photoshoot! My favourite boulder was broken open like egg! After spending a lot of time at the boulders we went for a walk on the beach and the had brunch in the cafe.
Back on the road, we drove up our old friend State Highway 1 all the way to Christchurch, stopping off half way for lunch in Timaru. The drive north of Timaru was probably the least exciting of all our drives and we resorted to playing eye spy for the last half hour. Considering the amount of time we've spent in the car this last few weeks, half an hours boredom wasn't too bad!
We're staying in a motel in Christchurch, which is luxury in comparison to most of the other places we've been staying. Motels here are like small UK hotels, but generally have more space. Our 'no frills' room is huge with a big bed, tv, ensuite and kitchen, excellent!
We chilled out for an hour and then walked through Hagley Park into Christchurch for a look around. We looked around Canterbury University which is modelled on Oxford and Cambridge and went to Cathedral Square. The cathedral wasn't hugely impressive in comparison to British Cathedrals, but was certainly pretty unique over here. It was the only stone church we've seen as most seem to be wooden.
After a look around we went for dinner in a restaurant called Coyote, nostalgic, and shared a yummy fajita platter. We stuffed ourselves and were still beaten! After, we rolled back to the motel and are now watching a film, Covert Affairs, and finishing the wine we bought in Napier.
Tomorrow we go on the Tranz-Alpine train and our pick up is at 7.40, eugh! It's our last full day before we head back to the UK so fingers crossed for some good weather!
