Cindy Aserkoff's Travels
Today wa a very busy day. It started with a long bus ride to the cuo chi tunnels that the Vietcong used to hide during the war. All I can say it is no wonder we lost. These people lived underground in conditions most of is cannot imagine. We went into 2 rooms, the hospital and the meeting room. We had the advantage of steps for tourists but had to go through a tunnel to Get to the rooms. I could only walk very hunched over to get thru the tunnel. The other tunnels were much more elaborate and deeper. Some could only be reached by crawling on your belly. There were approximately 2000 people living o the tunnels We saw the various traps that were set for the GIs. All in all, pretty sobering. From there we went to a pho place. I can report that i was like the pho at home. We opted not to go to the war crimes museums and instead crossed many more streets successfully. Then around dinner time, rush hour, we were given a ride in cyclo rickshaws and taken throughout the city. It was insane! There are cars, taxis, buses and motorbikes coming at you from all directions. There is a constant wave, drone of motorbikes. The rickshaws dropped us off at a water puppet show. There are people who maneuver theses puppets under water. There is a live band playing traditional music and providing the narration. It was very cute. After the puppet show we were take to a culinary school where we prepared Our own ginger chicken for dinner. The rest of the meal was excellent as well. This is last night in Saigon. It is a very young, energetic city. It seems to have an insane pace but somehow it all works. I will be glad to have a little less stimulation. Tomorrow we hard to the Mekong delta on a full day bus ride with stops along the way. Ssss
