We had wanted to go straight up to Byron Bay when we left Sydney, but when we were booking the rest of our trip back at Christmas everything was fully booked at Byron over the Easter weekend, so we decided to stop off in Coffs Harbour on the way. We're travelling by coach now, as we've sold our car, so it was a long 11 hour drive up the coast to get to Coffs, with a couple of stops for lunch and to stretch our legs - the scenery was getting much greener, and the rivers on this side of Australia actually have water in them! Luckily the ibis hotel that we had booked was across the road from the bus stop, so we haven't had to carry our backpacks too far yet! Our first day for looking around the town was Good Friday, so the majority of the shops were closed, but the weather was quite good so we walked down to the harbour to get some lunch. It's quite pretty, with a marina and beaches on either side with some fairly impressive looking surf (unfortunately we didn't have surf boards so we couldn't enjoy it). We did make the most of the good weather to visit Muttonbird Island, which is a small island connected to the mainland by a long breakwater. We walked up to the top (which was pretty steep) which gave us some very nice views of the town and the coast for quite a long way in both directions. We then walked over to the other side of the island, but didn't see any whales as it's not whale watching season yet. The next day, Easter Saturday, it was pouring with rain (making us feel a bit like we were at home), but the shopping centre was open so we went there for coffee and to make use of the free wifi. In the afternoon neither of us were feeling great, so we just relaxed in the hotel where we had a tv in our room, and there were loads of good films on the tv for us to enjoy. On Easter Sunday the clocks went back 1 hour as daylight savings was ending in NSW, so we enjoyed an extra hour lie in which was really nice (and we get another one later in the year at home too!). The weather had cleared a bit too, so in the afternoon we went for a walk by Coffs Creek and visited the North Coast Botanic Gardens too, where we saw loads of kookaburras and a few lizards too. For our last full day the weather had kindly cleared and it was warm and sunny, so we had coffee at the shopping centre again before walking down to the harbour to enjoy the views in the sunshine. We're off to Byron Bay next which we are really looking forward to, hopefully we'll get in some more surfing before we leave Australia!
