Our coach to Byron Bay didn't leave Coffs Harbour until 5pm, but we had to check out of our hotel at 10am - luckily out hotel let us leave our bags there durng the day, so we just walked to the shopping centre to get coffee and use the free wifi. It was quite a long day waiting around, but we just went to various places to eat and use free wifi. By the time the coach arrived it was already getting dark, so we didn't see any of the countryside during the drive, and when we got to Byron Bay we didn't see much of the town. Our hostel picked us up from the bus stop and we then went straight to sleep after our day of travelling. For our first full day here the weather was lovely, so we walked along the beach to explore Cape Byron. To get there we walked along Belongil, Main and Clarkes Beaches - ours, Belongil, was the least crowded which was good - and when we got to the Pass we climbed up a lookout to get some great views of the bay. We then walked along the Cape Byron track towards the lighthouse - on the way we stopped at mainland Australia's most Easterly point, and from the lookouts we saw loads of sea turtles swimming in the shallows. At the top of the headland was the lighthouse, with great views over the area in all directions, so we stopped at the cafe to enjoy the views for a while before walking back down to the beach and back to the hostel. It was pretty hot so we finished the day with a swim in the sea to cool off. The next day had more great weather, so we decided to do one of the things Byron is famous for - surfing! The hostel had some good boards for hire that were really cheap, only $20 for the whole day, so we went down to the beach to have a go. We weren't very successful at first, but finally Joel found a good spot for us and we both stood up a few times which we were very happy about. In the evening we went out for tea to the restaurant next to the resort, which had fairly cheap cider by Australian standards. The next day we explored the town, which is pretty small but full of surf shops and annoying travel agencies trying to sell trips to backpackers. It was quite windy and the surf was much bigger than the day before, so in the afternoon Joel had another go at surfing while I relaxed on the beach. By the late afternoon the weather was starting to turn, so we headed back to the resort before it started raining. Unfortunately the bad weather continued into our last day, with rain and drizzle a lot of the time. We had a nice breakfast and the cafe next door so that we could use their wifi, but when we went for a walk on the beach it started raining and we got pretty soaked! We dried off at the hostel and then went to the restaurant next door to get a pizza. The weather had cleared a bit, so after that we decided to take our chances and went back to the beach for a walk - there were loads of people surfing, including a little boy who looked about 6 and was really really good, we wish we were as good as him!
