Day 3- Adventures in Brussels!
Today has been mad and very tiring! We woke up and got out the hostel and headed for the train station. Due to our bags being so heavy, we decided the metro there was the best option rather than the 30 minute walk. The Paris train station is massive and really overwhelming but we managed to find where we were meant to be.
Lunch in Lille- The first part of our journey stopped at Lille where we had some lovely pizza and a cheap beer (hurray). The city seemed really nice even if we only got to the nearest cafe from the train station. The sun was out too so we were quite content in our hour stop over. We got back on the train aiming for Brussels.
You can smell the sweet smell as soon as we got off the train and into the main part of Brussels Station. We passed what was called a "fruit bar" but it was more like mixing anything bad for you with fruit. You could have melted chocolate, ice cream, whipped cream.. We were very tempted but wanted to got to the hotel and get unpacked. I was so tired by this point.
We stayed in a Meingner Hotel in a dorm which was weird to start with. I had forgotten that we had booked this type of room and got a shock when we got into the room to be greeted with 3 American men. They were all perfect gentlemen so I didn't feel scared or threatened. They were even friendly, imagine!!! Haha! Two of the guys were traveling together and told us of a great bar called Delirium that we had to check out.
Brussels Square/Delirium- We walked into town from our hotel which only across the canal and aimed for the beautiful square. We did however get slightly delayed by the prospect of a McDonalds!! And Belgian chicken nuggets are so much better than British ones. We then found the square which was really nice, every building is beautiful and extravagant. There's also a sense of calm in the square. It's full of tourists but everyone seems so chilled out. You can drink in the street so there were loads of groups just sitting on the ground with their beers chilling in the sun. We then walked around a bit, bought some Belgian chocolate and found two street performers singing many British classics such as "fix you" and "how to save a life" in very questionable English. They were good though and it made me feel like Scotland wasn't that far away...
Delirium- This bar is amazing! They hold the record for the most different types of alcohol sold in one place. I think it's 2000? They had awesome beer anyways! We tried a cherry one which was 8% and that was my favourite, we then had a lovely raspberry one and Becca tried a blonde wheat beer but I went back to the cherry. By this point I was feeling the beer and the exhaustion so we went back to the hotel.
Hotel Meininger- We met in with the two American men in our dorm and drank more beer until the bar closed. They had good chat and laughed at our Scottish accents so we were happy! Whilst trying to get upstairs to our beds, we met in with an older man who mentioned he was in the film industry. As the conversation went on, we realised he was big in the industry as he name dropped Jason Stathem and Hans Zimmer! Madness!
Another epic day! Off to Amsterdam tomorrow
