We arrived at our hostel in the middle of the night on Thursday, after a three hour bus ride from Rome Ciampino airport. Our hostel was in Sorrento. We woke up at 7:30am for breakfast, and then we were taking a bus to Positano for the day. The bus ride was all along winding, narrow roads on the coast. We were pretty high up, basically following a mountain. We had a long scenic walk to the beach, down a bunch of steps. We passed by a lot of hotels on the way as well. It was nice and sunny out. This was our beach day. We had the day to ourselves to walk around the Positano shops and lay on the beach. We got big paninis for lunch at a famous panini shop, and got to eat on the beach. We even went swimming in the Mediterranean, which was really nice blue water. It was really sunny out, but the water was still pretty cold. We took the bus back to Sorrento later in the day, and then went in to the city for dinner. We walked 7.16 miles today. On Saturday, we had an even earlier morning. We met at 6:45am for breakfast, since we had to catch an early ferry ride to Capri. We took a private boat tour around Capri and the boat stopped at the Blue Grotto. We then all got in small row boats to go inside the Blue Grotto, which was so cool to see. I have never seen water more blue and the boat ride in was really fun. The cave was so narrow we all had to duck going inside and basically lay down in the boat. We were told Beyonce shot part of a music video in the Blue Grotto somewhat recently. We then cruised by a house that is owned by the Armani family (Giorgio Armani), as well as the second most famous lightout in Europe. We passed by a house that Michael Jackson tried buying from the owner multiple times, but who denied him no matter how much money he offered. The boat cruise took us by the Green grotto, as well as the white grotto. The water was so pretty to be out on all day. After the boat ride, we took a bus to Ana Capri, where we could walk around the city center. We did a chocolate tasting after lunch, and then went to find the chair lift that goes up the mountain of Ana Capri. It was so cold on the chair lift and the top of the mountain was a lot colder than expected. The top was really foggy as well, but the view during the ride was definitely somethinig to see. We walked back down to Capri, a pretty long walk all down steps to catch the ferry back to Sorrento. We walked 6.68 miles today. On Sunday, our last day of our trip, we took an hour bus ride to Pompeii. We got to see the grounds of Pompeii and take a guided tour. We drove toward Mount Vesuvius, which we were told is the most dangerous volcano, since it is still active. If it erupted, it would send rocks to Positano and Capri as well. Over 3 million people live under the mountain as well. Pompeii was 165 acres. The people who lived in this area usually didn't make it past age 40 due to the amount of lead in the area, and not knowing how dangerous it was to be around. There also used to be a river running through the back, which isn't there anymore. This area is part of Naples, which is where pizza in Italy originated, so we went to Pompeii pizza before we headed back to the bus to take us back to Rome airport. We did 4.55 miles of walking today. We had a long ride back to the airport, and our flight back to Dublin was Monday morning at 10:55am, so we spent the night at the airport. By the time we got back to Cork, we were definitely exhausted and couldn't wait to shower and do our laundry. We had to pack for 16 days in a carry on bag, which was a challenge in itself. My favorite place that I would love to go back to is definitely Italy. Croatia would be a great vacation spot if you're looking for something more low-key as well. Throughout the 16 days we walked 98.16 miles.
