On Thursday, technically late Wednesday night, four of us left to catch a 1:00am express bus to the Dublin Airport to head to Brussels, Belgium. The bus ride to the airport is 3 hours, and then we had to catch a 6:30am flight to Zaventem Airport. There was another hour time difference there, so it was an hour later than it would be in Ireland, so a 6 hour difference from home. We got in around 9:30am and took a train to Brussels Central Station to find the area our hotel was in. We then went to our hotel, Hotel Saint Nicolas, to drop our backpacks off. The first thing we wanted to do was find a waffle stand to get some Belgian waffles at Los Churros, Belgian Waffles. We loved the waffles and there's definitely no comparison to home. You could put a lot of different toppings on like nutella, chocolate syrup, whip cream, strawberries, or bananas. We then walked around Brussels and went to see Grand Place, which marks the central square of Brussels. This builidng is surround by two other large buildings, the Town Hall, and the Breadhouse which contains the Museum of the City of Brussels. This spot is really touristy and is the most well-known landmark in Brussels. We walked around the streets of Brussels and went in to see some shops. We saw a few horse and carriages as well. We then went to lunch at L' Arlequin. It was on a street where the workers of the restaurant all try to give you a deal and tell you about their specials to try to get you to come inside. I got mussels for lunch since that's supposed to be a bigger thing in Brussels, and they were pretty good. We then went to Musee du Cacao et du Chocolat, the Chocolate Museum for a tour. We got to walk around this house and read all about different types of chocolate and where it comes from. The end of the tour had a demonstration where the chocolate chef showed us the temperature he has to keep the chocolate and the different molds he can use for it. There were samples throughout the museum of different types of chocolate from different locations as well. We then took a subway to the Atomium in Brussels. The whole thing forms a unit cell that is magnified 165 billion times. Tubes connect all the spheres, and there were stairs and elevators running throughout the whole monument. At the top, there was a really pretty panoramic view of the city of Brussels. There were 9 spheres to the building connected by 20 tubes, and the whole structure rests on 3 pillars. By the time we got back to our hotel area, we just wanted something quick to eat, so we stopped for pizza close by. We then went over to Grand Place to see it at night all lit up. The next morning, we woke up to get breakfast and then take a train to our bus that we would be taking to Amsterdam.
