We started the day with a walk around Merdeka square and the Lake gardens stopping in the butterfly house. It was in Merdeka Square that Malaysias independence was proclaimed in 1957. The Lake Gradens are where the British built their homes, away from the hustle of city. The butterfly Park, Taman Rama Rama,, contains 6000 butterflies but as the garden is so big it didn't seem that there were that many. After a few hours we were a sweaty mess so we found refuge in theair condiitoned TGI Fridays. In the evening we took a walk around Chinatown and the market, the fake bags and watches were really good and cheap! Later that evening we chilled in the hostel and watched the football. EPL is back woo hoo!!
Yet another late get up this morning, we can't seem to wake earlier than 11 or 12am! I don't think the windowless rooms and lack of natural light help! We took a taxi out of town to The Batu Caves which were full of Hindu shrines and monkeys. At the netrance is a huge golden statue of Muruga which the caves have been dedicated. To the left of the statue are 272 steps that lead up to the cave. The limestone cliff face is swarming with monkeys which run up and down the steps eating nuts and bananas from the cave visitors. The inside of the cave were stunning especially where the light creeps in from the small openings in the top. We went to the Natural History Museum at Merdeka Square which was small but worth a look especially the section on British rule and the Commonwealth. Football dominated our evening once more, a huge group of us crowded round the hostels tv for United, Arsenal and Chelsea opening games.
Bradley walked into Chinatown market to buy us melon and pineapple for breakfast then we took a cab to KLCC, a huge shopping centre and park at the base of the Petronas Towers. Here they had to Chelsea's delight a Topshop and Marks & Sparks! After some shopping we watched the Simpsons Movie then took a walk around the fountains and gardens.
Wednesday morning we got a cab out to Petaling Jaya to go to Sunway Lagoon, a massive water and theme park. It was sunny on the way there but shortly after we arrived the heavens opened! We hung around for about an hour as we had come so far and luckily it clearedup. We spent a few hours in the water park then went into the theme park which was a little boring save for the water rapids, we got soaked! Stupidly we had already changed into our clothes by then. Stayed up untill 3am to watch the Chelsea game but was worth it as we won!!
Friday morning we were on our way to the Petronas Towers by 7:30am. We queued for about 90minutes to secure 2 of the 1400 free tickets up to the towers Skybridge. After a security check, 3D film about Petronas oil (boring) and an earpopping lift ride we reached the 41st floor. The bridge is only 170m above ground (the building is 451m high) but has excellent views over the city. The only disappointment was that you have about 2 minutes before you are escorted back down. Worth a visit though. After the climb we grabbed some breakfast and watched 2 movies (we love our cinema & it only costs 2quid for both of us!) before heading back to the hotel.
Got woken up on Sunday morning at about 8:30am by a comotion in the hallway, people banging and shouting. I thought don't these people realise others are trying to sleep? Brad got up and had a look out of the room, ran back, switched on the light and shouted to get dressed and get out. i didn't realise what was going on but the look on his face told me it was serious. We grabbed as much of our stuff as possible and ran outside past people just standing around doing nothing and others who were still banging on others doors. i looked back towards the rear of our floor to see thick black smoke and flames licking the crumbling ceiling. I have never been in a situation like this before and I was a complete mess, if it hadn't been for Bradleys calmness I don't know what I would have done. When we reached the street there was already a huge crowd gathering gawping at the smoke billowing out of the top floor and roof. There were some people who hadn't managed to grab anything. The fire service arrived about 20mins later and took about an hour and a half to put the fire out. They didn't really look as though they were in a hurry and were seen drinking cokes in the lobby of the hotel. After it was cleared and okayed to go inside, Bradley went back to se if he could retrieve the rest of our stuff but through no light and so much water he couldn't see anything. We lost sunglasses, clothes and our ipod but were lucky to have all our documents safe. Talking to other backpackers we discovered that it was John who had alerted the hostel staff. he woke to find he had no electricity and asked staff to investigate. They had a look upstairs and discovered the fire. One girl went to almost every room alerting everyone as some were still sleeping before getting out herself. We had only one more night in KL so we checked into a nice hotel, 4x the price of the hostel but we needed it after what happened. We planned to have another evening watching the footie in the hostel but obviously that wasn't gonna happen! So we all met in the reggae bar and hada fantastic night. We watched both games while necking beers, cocktails and countless tequila shots. We finished the ngith with loads of drunken dancing so we ended a very bad day on a high!
We woke with steaming hangovers and missed breakfast so quickly packed and went to catch our bus to Melaka. On arrival we checked into Tonys Guest House.
