My Family Travels
I have been wanting to go to Glacier ever since I first heard about this amazing park. And I was not disappointed! Here are some highlights of our long day at Glacier National Park.
Transportation- We drove the car along the Going-To-The-Sun Road. This is the most popular road in the park. Wow, there were a ton of people on this road! We couldn't even find parking at one of the stops that we wanted to make. Another option could have been taking the in-park shuttle. Or you could take the cute red "jammers". These are an old way of going around the park. They are kind of like a bus, but not so big.
Weeping Wall- Along the road there is a section full of waterfalls coming right down on the road. This is called the Weeping Wall. During the early summer, there is so much melt from the snow that it falls down the wall and right on to the road. Cars can drive right through the waterfalls. Since it was late summer when we came, the water was more of a trickle, and so the wall looked like it was weeping more than waterfalls. Thus how the wall got its name.
Big Bend- This was a very beautiful spot to stop and see the view. I made my peanut butter and jelly sandwich here and soaked it all in! What a great place to sit and enjoy God's creation.
Hidden Lake- The only hike that Paul and I took today was to go see Hidden Lake off of Logan Pass. It was 1.5 miles out to the overlook and 1.5 miles back. Going to the overlook took some encouragement from Paul. It was full of steps. I am still not back to my stamina from before the accident, so we had to stop a few times for me to catch my breath. But once we got to the overlook, it was well worth the hike! It was so beautiful! All the water that I have seen in this park have a special turquoise blue hue to them. And this beautiful lake was hidden in a valley between several mountains. What a fantastic experience.
Goats - On our hike out to see Hidden Lake, we saw many, many goats. And not just goats up and far away in the mountains. No, these goats were super close by. Paul and I were going to go down the path one way, but we couldn't because there was a goat on the path. We saw goat families in the snow. We saw goats hopping and skipping along the rugged paths of stone. It was very fun to see the goats all around, since they didn't cause any problems.
Many Glacier Lodge- Our last place we stopped was the Many Glacier Lodge. This is a beautiful Lodge to stay in. The view of the lake out by its patio is just breath taking. Maybe someday Paul and I will be able to stay there. (I think the list of fun hotels that I want to stay at is growing very large!) Paul's dad remembers visiting this Lodge over 50 years ago when he was in this area. He still fondly remembers a picture that he took here.
Podcast- One special thing that this National Park did for this road is that they made podcasts about each stop. I downloaded these 1-2 minute informational helps to listen to at the right time. They were great! They were not too long and they gave some interesting facts or hints about what was around. I would suggest listening to these if you are going to Glacier.
Overall we had a very good day. My legs are super tired from the hike, but they will be ready for whatever we have next! I will sleep well tonight!
