My Family Travels
We used all sorts of transportation in San Francisco. Some was used successfully, while others were hard to get a hang of. Here is what we did while trying to navigate the city by the bay.
Train - Our hotel was in Fremont, which is a suburb of San Francisco. So we were able to take the BART train into town. It was easy to figure out.
Boat - We took a boat out to Alcatraz Island. Once we got there we found out that there was a garden tour of the island right away. This tour was only given once a day, twice a week. And, being my father's daughter, I needed my garden visit of this trip. It was really interesting because the families of the guards that lived on the island did their best to garden on it. We were able to go into some gardens that normally regular visitors can't go in. So we got some nice pictures from that. Then we took the free audio tour of the cell house. It was very interesting. It talked about every day life, and the few escape attempts. We ended up spending over 4 hours on the island!
Bus - We couldn't figure out the bus system here. The maps gave us a good idea, but that was about it. So we spent a part of the day just wandering around the city by bus.
Cable Car - San Francisco is known for its hills. It is also known for its cable cars. We experienced both by riding a cable car. While we were on our ride, a nice man pointed out some great views of the city from some hills. The car was very noisy, and since it was rush hour, it was very crowded as well.
Flying - Actually we didn't fly, but we saw some balls flying around a baseball park. And the night was sponsored by Air New Zealand and a few lucky fans got tickets to fly to New Zealand. The game was very fun. The park is right on the bay. I would have liked to see a home run hit into the bay, but that didn't happen while we were there. The game was fun to see.
Overall, San Francisco was nice. But we had a hard time getting around the city, even though we did have an unlimited pass to go on the buses. And we were done with being in cities. Next stop was National Parks! Those are more our style.
