Party time on phi phi
After the best nights sleep in a long while, I boarded the ferry to the beautiful island of koh phi phi. As soon as the 'high speed catamaran' pulled in you could see exactly why the island had gotten it's reputation of splendour. However the island was anything but tranquil. The minute I stepped on the pier the mob of sellers flashed every type of accommodation in my sweaty face! I had booked ahead which I would definitely recommend. So I went in search of 'flower bungalows'.
On my quest I luckily bumped into two amazing kiwi girls who ended up being the best friends I could have asked for to party with :). So day one we chilled on Long Beach. Around 30mins walk from the centre but well worth it. A lot less tourists and really stunning scenery. That night we found a gorgeous little restaurant called Basil's Bistro where I discovered masamman curry for the first time! Then it was beach party time! Koh phi phi has a two or three main party bars that play good club anthems mixed with house and drum and bass. Our favourite was slinkys! The beach party was amazing with cool fire shows and dangerous fire skipping/limbo/hoops. (Would not recommend the skipping -saw lots of brutal burns).
Day two was dedicated to visiting the Islands main attractions including maya bay, aka where they filmed the beach. There are so many tour operators on the island so it's hard to recommend one however ours was brilliant. Perhaps we got lucky on our tour guide Dexter as he definitely made the tour! We stopped off at various places, did some cliff jumping (well I watched) and snorkelling. You had to pay 100 baht to get on to maya beach but it was worth it. Despite the bucket load of tourists, it was still beautiful. The tour was finished off with a gorgeous sunset and when darkness fell we checked out the plankton! It really does glow in the dark!
So a memorable and fun trip to the beautiful island! I would definitely recommend coming however be prepared for the tourists. I guess koh phi phi is somewhat of a contradiction. On the one hand it is incredibly beautiful. However that beauty has made it into a hive of activity. You look out of the bay and it's peaceful serenity then you look around you and it's chaotic... I still loved it though!
