The peaceful like of Pai!
Ever since I started my travels and mentioned the north of Thailand, everyone immediately said "you have to go to pai!" So that's what I did. Pai is a little town around four hours drive north east of Chiang mai. Deep in the green mountains the village has become a hippy haven for travellers from all over the world. My bus ride over was surprisingly nice despite all the bends. I got great views of the sun setting over the mountains!
I spent three nights three days in Pai but could have spent longer. The town is pretty with loads of great places to eat. There was all kinds of food varieties including burritos, falafel and of course jacket potatoes! I had been craving wholesome home comfort food for a whole so my sour cream sweet potato hit the spot! Pai is made up of two main market streets where you can buy all sorts of wonderful things. I treated myself to a hair braid and unleashed my inner hippy ;)!
What also made my trip so special was my hostel. Spicy Pai is one of the spicy family found in other parts of Thailand and Laos. On what I've heard spicy pai is the best and I can certainly believe it. Really friendly, comfortable yet rustic and out in the middle of nowhere. The dorms were raised bamboo huts with wooden interior. But despite the back to basics feel you still got nice hot showers! :)
Apart from eating and enjoying the free fire shows I did explore around Pai itself. There is a lot to see and do here including waterfalls, temples and a huge canyon network. I took a tour of all the best spots but if you can it's best to do it alone with a scooter. My favourite places were a viewpoint where you got gorgeous Thai green tea and the canyons. There was also a big Buddha near the hostel which was nice to go see sunset from.
I also met an awesome group of people at spicy pai who were also travelling into Laos :). So all in all a great few days here. The perfect place to put your feel up and take a step back. It was the best remedy for me after a long adventure in Thailand and will have hopefully prepared me for the trek that will be getting to Laos...
Another country down, only four to go :s time is flying by!
