Illinois really knew what they were doing when they built their capital as it was just stunning inside. The grounds were quite attractive but not extraordinary compared to the average of capitals. Once we got through the security we were immediately awestruck. It was very elegant and thought out carefully with regard to the use of large amounts of colored marbles throughout with coordinating paint, paintings, and ornamentation. Each wing and level within each wing had its own scheme of décor. The marble cutting was done with great skill. The coordination of all of the elements made for a viewing that left you speechless. Everything was obviously done with great thought and precision. We were forced to take a guide tour so we did not linger as we normally would appreciating all of the details of the capital, however we did get to see the majority of what was available to view. The Senate and House Chambers left nothing to be desired as they were as equally stunning as everything else. The stained glass was exquisite and the décor was very well appointed. We only briefly got to stay and there were quite a few people so I wasn't able to get nearly as many photos as I would have liked. Our tour guide was witty and funny and not nearly as obnoxious as our Boston high school tour guide. We left very pleased with our viewing of this capital. Our picture turned out with me having my eyes closed which I was a little disappointed at but the girls said it was ok because there have been quite a few pictures of them looking goofy! I had initially thought that this capital was original, but unfortunately it was not because as we drove away a few blocks later we saw the original capital that was significantly smaller and quite humble in comparison to the newer capital. -Carrie
