State House, Dover, Delaware
This State House too, as in Maryland, was somewhat understated in relation to the buildings that surrounded as it did not immediately set itself out from the others that were spaced somewhat from each other and were all of the government offices in and around the center-placed capital. The landscaping was nice but simple and the building looked like most New England brick buildings. The difference in this capital came truly when you entered. As with most all capitals it is necessary to show ID and go through a metal detector but once you did that a visitor has free rein to look around and get up close and personal everywhere. We were even allowed to view the personal desk of the governor where he had personal pictures and other personal items viewable and was not in some back room but rather upfront on the second floor hallway. We were also allowed open access to all areas of the Chambers. The portraits were a most interesting piece as there was a picture, painting, or silhouette of every governor going back to the very first. The piece d' résistance was the fact that one of the workers small dogs had free roaming ability of the entire place.
As to the structure and whatnot it was all well maintained and beautifully created. It was a well respected piece of history but it was obvious that it being by and for the people was exceptionally important.
We went to the informational center/archives and had the most helpful lady that was so excited to have us see everything they had to offer which along with the openness, kindness, and overall simplicity of the State House this is my overall favorite capital so far! - Carrie
