Great day’s cycling today. The sun came out and it was fine all day.
We started off with a steep climb out of the back of Vienne. Thereafter, the morning comprised empty roads through lovely rolling countryside. There was a succession of long, easy, climbs and long, fast, downhills.
Just before lunch, we stumbled upon an amazing kite festival (see previous entry). There were literally hundreds of kites in the air. Some of them were as big as houses. They had perfect wind for the event.
Cycling on, we reached our mid-day destination of Le Palais Idéal in the village of Hauterives (previous entry) where a Frenchman has spend the bulk of his life building a ‘palace’. Amazing place. After spending 33 years building it, he spent the next seven building his own tomb.(You can find out more on Wiki.)
Pushed on to a place called Voreppe. Alps. Not far from Grenoble. Great scenery.

Martyn also not far from Voiron the place where some monks came up with the drink Chartreuse, in various colours. Did the tour in 1982 but didn't understand a word of it (except "please shut the door" as it was in fast French. Free samples at the end though.
