On the bus at 8.30am.
Wonderful photo opportunity looking back over Dubrovnik.
Passed through the border to Montenegro.
Passports checked and stamped.
Into the small old town of Kotor.
Very, very old town.
Very scenic.
The thing about this town though is the stone wall that stretches up and over the surrounding mountain.
It looked amazing.
Over 2 kilometres long and definitely all up hill!
No one in our group tried the hike!
Then onto the twin islands of St George and Our Lady of the Rock.
We went out in a smallish covered boat to Our Lady of The Rock.
And had a wonderful tour of the church and a talk by an historian there.
I am very tired and it's only 7pm.
I'll try to grab the history from the Internet.
Sitting at my window, on the back of an armchair to get the view, watching the changing light over Dubrovnik, eating almonds and banana slices I took from breakfast.
Should have taken more.
Seriously.
About to attack the fruit bowl.
Internet:
Our Lady of the Rocks is one of the two islets off the coast of Perast in Bay of Kotor, Montenegro.
Our Lady of the Rocks sits on a man-made island. On 22nd July 1452 two brothers were fishing in front of Perast and found a picture of the Madonna and child painted by Lovro Dobricevic stuck on a protruding rock. They took it home and seemingly overnight, one brother who had been ill for a long time, was healed. They took this as a sign and vowed to build a church on the spot. The town began the tradition of throwing a rock into the sea at this spot whenever they returned safely from a voyage. Old ships were filled with rocks and scuttled here to help build up the island.
Records show that by 1484 there was a church here. In May 1535 the town of Perast decided to expand the church and dedicate it to the Blessed Virgin. Documents from 1579 show the church was named Our Lady of the Rocks.
The church lost a lot of its treasure on 22nd June 1624 when pirates from Tunisia and Carthage attacked Perast, plundered the churches and took most of the population into slavery. The island and church were finally finished in 1630, almost 200 years after the picture was found.
In 1667 the church was hit again. A large earthquake destroyed the church, but it was rebuilt and that’s the building we see on the island today.

M That's fascinating! I can't believe what people can do sometimes! The church looked very interesting and so does those man made islands. Is pouring in Melbourne and I am sitting at a coffee shop writing to you because the team was to crowded to get into so thought I would relax instead! I love you xx
Andrew Browning This was really amazing. The detail, so fine.
Daryl Oh come on - that's ridiculously beautiful!!
Andrew Browning ***Montenegro*** Scenic trip across the border and wow you’re in another country! Fascinating story about “Our Lady Of The Rock” island and rock throwing tradition that still exists. And to think they filled old ships with rocks and sunk them to help build the island. Great little church filled with history eh? Interesting day. AndrewXx
