Happy to say that this chapter is shorter than we first thought it might be. We decided a little while ago that Onslow wasn't the place we needed to be............so last weekend we made the decision to hand in our notice and hit the road. We thought Geraldton would be the place to go but as happens, all the time, the best laid plans were about to take a rather large and exciting change.
On Wednesday morning Kimbo had a call from work to say the truck that should be arriving with stock wasn't, so he was lucky enough to have the day off........sadly it didn't include me. While I was gas bagging with a dear friend on the phone he had a call from a trucking company in Broome and offered him a job. He didn't even know he'd applied for a job there, anyhow it doesn't matter how it happened but plans changed and now instead of heading south we will be heading back to our old stomping ground of Broome. Everything has fallen into place so quickly it's amazing.
We've arranged a caravan park, which used to be a bit challenging when trying to organise a long stay in Broome which also incorporates the tourist season, but our timing was perfect. As a bonus we'll only be paying about 2/3 of what we currently pay for a patch of sand and it's an ensuite site to boot.
As an added bonus we were able to finish work today earlier than planned so tonight is our last night and we couldn't be more excited.
I've found it really sad to see the demise of Onslow, which was once a lovely fishing town. As a local said to me its "the little town that was". A stark reminder of what happens when big business comes to town and if you're a FIFO worker it doesn't affect you at all, because you are earning the big bucks and taking it back to where you live. But if you're a local or (as we were) working for award wages, it's impossible to maintain a decent, healthy, viable and worthwhile lifestyle due to the cost of living.
But that's old news now and we're looking forward with eyes wide open to whatever lies ahead. Exciting times for us with good light in Broome. We'll be lying on the beach and staring at the moon real soon!
Watch this space :)
