We had an eventful day at Zion. Pulled into a campground right outside the park, cute town of Springdale with a site right along the river. Kids went right down to explore. It is awesome to watch them make their own fun with just rocks, water and some frogs.
We headed into Zion knowing that we would hike through the Narrows- an area of the canyon only 30 feet wide with water to wade through with beautiful red and pink cliffs reaching above us. It was awesome.
After taking the shuttle down a couple of stops we got off to take a short hike to the Emerald Pond- green because of algae that forms there. 2 miles and we were back at one of the lodges for a beer and pretzels.
Back to the campsite so the kids could go back in the river; they found a friend with a tube and a fishing net that Danny soon acquired. As storms started building all around us we left for dinner at an awesome restaurant right outside the campground- Whiptails. As the rain started and then fell hard, the waitstaff started talking about flash flooding and it was clearly time to run for it.
Getting close to the campsite, a older kid yelled through the rain “are you evacuating?”
Which to us was a good indicator that we better.
We threw in soaking wet, chairs boogie boards, shoes and heading up ground towards the main road, safe.
In one hour 3 inches of rain fell. Road in Zion were washed out, people were stranded; we were scared but safe.

Lorri OMG - what an incredible story. So glad you evacuated when you did. Can hardly wait to hear more about your experiences. I am assuming you are starting your way back? Through Texas or the more direct route?
