After paying our 1 dollar coin for 6 minutes of hot water, we were showered and having breakfast ready for the day. I FaceTimed my Mum and Dad who happened to be with Jack, Nanny Jen and Uncle Mike having a lovely family roast dinner. We chatted away for some time, mainly with me laughing at they're craziness! I miss my family but I'm having such an amazing time here I don't want it to end.
We drove 45 mins to Abel Tasman National Park as we'd read it was suppose to be one of New Zealand's most beautiful parks. The entire coastal walk could take 3 days to complete. Some travellers packed their hiking bags with a tent and would stay at different bays along this coast. Although this sounded amazing, in theory we thought it might be hard work- especially with the hundreds of sand flies at night. No thank you!
The National Park is named after the Dutch explorer Abel Janszoon Tasman who documented the first sighting and landing on New Zealand in 1642, but was chased away by Maori tribes. We packed our rucksacks and set off for our hike. The sun was shining without a cloud in the sky, perfect for all the amazing views along the way. We got chatting to an elderly Kiwi couple who have been to all the bays throughout the coastline. They gave us a few tips and sent us on our way.
The walk was fairly strenuous but full of stunning views of little coves and beaches all the way along. The sea was a gorgeous crystal clear turquoise colour. It wasn't until 3 kms in that we realised we had left our water bottle on the front seat of the camper! What a pair of idiots! We hoped we could get a drink in one of the little cafes on a beach or something. Unfortunately, we were later informed by a couple that there were no cafes or shops the whole way along the coast as it was a national park. We felt a bit stupid for assuming that there would be, so when they asked us if we had at least packed water, we both smiled and said "God yes of course we've brought water ha...ha!".
After 6 km, we reached Apple tree bay. The beach was beautiful, yellow sand with clear shallow blue sea. We sat on the beach for a few hours, Matt read his book while I had a little nap. Luckily Matt had brought an apple and pear, so that kept us going for a while. We were starting to get thirsty as the sun beamed down on us, time to leave we thought!
Typically, the walk back to the camper seemed a lot further than the walk out but we made it back in good time... and alive. We passed a restaurant just outside the national park entrance and dived in for some tap water! We decided to spend that night back at the free car park in Nelson which was back in the direction of Bleinham- where we were heading for our wine tasting tour.
On arriving at the car park, we found a half decent spot for the night and went on the hunt for a cheap restaurant. We ended up in a Wetherspoons type pub and had a humungous gourmet burger and fries, with an alcoholic drink for 20 dollars each, pretty good! After, we had a wonder around the shops and headed back to the camper for the evening. A rare free nights sleep in New Zealand!
