We woke feeling a tad hungover but not too bad! After making a cooked breakfast at the campsite, we packed up ready to go. The weather was a little overcast so we decided to head down to Paihia town centre to see what was on. Whilst on the ferry yesterday, we passed a town on one of the bays called Russell. It looked very quaint and interesting so we decided to visit there for the day.
After a short ferry ride of 15 minutes, we were walking onto the wooden jetty of Russell harbour. The architecture had a French Polynesian influence which I loved. We found a little cafe and stopped for a drink and sat on the bank with our books, relaxing for a few hours while watching the world go by. After grabbing a quick bite to eat at the cafe, we were on our way back to Paihia, it had been a lovely little visit.
That afternoon we decided to head back south towards Whangarei. We tried to look for a free car park for the night by asking at one of the tourist I-Site offices. They gave us two places we could have parked overnight for free which was fab. However, when we arrived at the both, all the other Campervans were self contained (which we aren't!), and when I checked on the two camping apps, they stated only for self contained vehicles. Matt was happy to risk it and in all honesty we most probably would have been ok, but I really didn't want a 200 dollar fine and I knew I wouldn't sleep well so we went to a campsite for 36 dollars instead. It was handy we did as we were in desperate need of doing laundry. I sorted out all the laundry and made us some dinner while Matt read his book. He does all the driving so that makes us a good team! We had no idea what are plans were for the next few days until we leave for Fiji, we would just play it by ear!
