Feeling fresh and full from our breakfast of toast spread heavily with our new honey, we set off for the day! We had been informed that Wellington Museum was a must see so that was our first stop.
The museums name was Te Papa and was possibly one of the best I've ever been too. Each floor was a different section of history. Now, New Zealand doesn't have anything like as much history recorded as the UK but that actually made some of it very easy to follow and understand without feeling a tad overwhelmed. The first floor focused on the physical formation of New Zealand and its history of natural disasters. I actually found this section the most interesting personally. Then, they had a section on New Zealand's part played in both the world wars which was very eye opening as I wasn't aware of this. In school we were taught about how the Americans helped Britain but actually Australia and New Zealand played massive parts and lost thousands of men, so it was good to recognise this.
The other parts of the museum were displaying artefacts from old Maori tribes and also the history of media. After a good wonder around for two hours, we decided to move on. There was a food market open in the car park next to the museum so we thought we'd take a gander. There were lots of stalls with tasters available which I obviously took advantage of but Matt kept rushing me on which was very annoying! He really doesn't get excited by a free taster that boy! We bought lunch in the market from a pulled pork stall. We had bowls filled with salads and pork topped with BBQ sauce, it was really very good!
That afternoon, we made the decision to skip our short stay in Napier as this was originally one of our destinations, and drive all the way to Lake Taupo. Lake Taupo is the biggest lake in New Zealand and is the size roughly of Singapore! There's lots to do in Taupo so we couldn't wait to spend a good few days there. The drive took us 7 hours in total but we had a laugh the whole way as we do. We were very lucky as at one point a guy in front of us got pulled over by the Police for speeding. We were pretty much doing the same speed which wasn't that fast but it was a close call for us. I had told Matt the police were always looking out for people speeding but I think the fact he saw it for himself was a bit of an eye opener!
The late afternoon sun was shining in Taupo so we decided to finish off the day with a drink in a local bar. We sat outside with our very expensive beers and cider before deciding that Pak N Save beverages were probably the way forward for us! We had researched a free farm where we could stay the night so we headed straight there. Unfortunately, there had been some weirdo on the loose at the farm so it had been blocked off my the police. We planned to wait along with 50 other campervans until the situation had been resolved, however we got bored and tired so decided to take the hit and go to a campsite for the night.
We found one still open at 9pm called All Seasons. It was 44 dollars a night for power and 5 dollars for the Internet. I was desperate for good wifi as the last place wouldn't work so I caught up with my family on FaceTime and researched things to do whilst in Taupo. There is fortunately a crazy amount of things to do so we were pleased we made the decision to spend an extra day here! I couldn't wait to get planning!
