After having the most relaxing day yesterday, watching a total of 5 films in one day with 6 boxes of confectionary goods down, we packed up ready to check-out of the apartment. It had been amazing and we were both very glad we forked out on staying in an air BnB over Christmas, it was definitely worth it!
We made our way to Hot Water Beach in the Coromandel peninsula. This beach was a natural wonder famous for tourists and locals being able to dig their own spa pool as water from the hot springs below seeps up through the sand. On arriving at midday, we were unfortunately too late to dig our own spa pool due to the tide making it's way in fast. There is one small area on the whole beach where you are able to dig and by the time we would have got started, the sea would be in and washing our pit away. So instead, we made the most of someone else's hard work and dipped into another already made pool. The water was boiling, genuinely too hot to even sit or stand in so we thought we give it a miss and avoid 3rd degree burns later.
The beach was stunning in itself so we packed a few snacks and drinks, and sat reading our books in the sun for a few hours, what a way to spend Boxing Day! That evening, we drove to Hahei, the town next door, and had a lovely dinner there in one of the nice restaurants. Matt had pizza (standard) and I had fish and chips with salad. It was expensive but definitely worth it! As there were no free campsites available in this area, we decided to find a cheaper campsite and stay without power. We managed to find one out in the sticks but the prices had increased from what was showing on the app which is always really quite annoying, so our 'cheap' night still cost us 30 dollars... oh well! We spent the rest of the evening chilling in the camper before calling it a day. Apparently it's National Beach Week in New Zealand this week so we were going to find another nice little beach to spend the day on tomorrow. Love a beach day!
