Cuba - More than old cars
First stop on our way to Bideford was to look for the Polkinghorne Manor in Gwinear. We found it although it is now owned by the Laity family for some time now. Anne's mother's maiden name was Polkinghorne and it is thought that her family came from this area of Cornwall. We did not venture down the lane but instead wandered through some graveyards nearby none of which disclosed any relations, which we suspect might be in a private graveyard on the farm's site.
From there it was on to Newquay where a friend of ours in NZ hails from. Unfortunately John we were unable to find any free spaces to park the car; no wonder you moved to NZ!
Next stop Padstow where we did find somewhere to park although not that nearby. Nice very busy little village with lots of quirky galleries and eateries. Spent quite a bit of time there and had lunch.
Final stop was Port Isaac where the TV program Doc Martin is filmed. No sign of any filming while we were there so searched out the buildings that we might recognise. These included the Doc's house, the school (which is actually as church), the outdoor restaurant (which is not a restaurant - just a property which looks out over the bay) and the chemists (which is a dairy). We had to park a ways away from this village also as you might imagine. There were some Doc Martin nick nacks that could be purchased but not an overabundance of supply. It was an interesting little village tucked away in a bay and of course the tide was out.
Now off to Bideford where we will stay for 3 nights and do some day trips.
