Douglas Brown's Travels
Day 23 I slept well and did not get out if bed until 8:15am and wandered down to breakfast at 9am. The choice for breakfast was very poor and nit up to the standard I had received for the last 3 weeks. At 10:30am Bill, Joan and I caught the hotel shuttle bus to the airport and then the train into the city. It cost us 18 euro return. It was a hot and very humid day and amongst the buildings of the city there was not a trace of breeze. We had no set plan for our visit and just wandered the city block seeing what we could see. Our tour map was not very useful as the street names on the map often differed to those shown on the corner of the street. The first impressive find we made was a church which did not look very special from the outside. However, the inside was something to behold. This was San Maurizio al Monastero Maggiore, original part of a Benedictine convent. Every inch of the inside of this amazing building had been decorated with Bernardo Luini's frescoes. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Mau rizio_al_Monastero_Maggiore We then took a few right and left turns and found ourselves at the Leonardo Da Vinci designed Milan Cathedral. This was a truly spectacular building. It is said that this building inspired many Walt Disney's fantasy castles. We did not go on a tour as the Que. to do so was far too long. I was fascinated by the armed soldiers patrolling the perimeter and the body search and airport style detectors used on each person entering. I was also taken by the feathered cap being worn by the soldiers. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milan_C athedral After wandering around for about an hour I decided I was hungry so we found a cafe for lunch. After lunch we did some more site seeing. A highlight of the afternoon was seeing the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, one of the worlds oldest shopping arcades. Named after the first King of the Kingdom of Italy, it houses all the top retail names you think of when you think of Milan. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galleri a_Vittorio_Emanuele_II The heat was starting to get to us so we rested under the shade of trees in a small park before finding our way ( with the help of strangers) to the railway station for our return journey to our hotel. We arrived back at the hotel at 5:30pm. Not wishing to go walking again, we chose to dine in the hotel where I had spaghetti carbonara as a starter and a delicious Caesar Salad as a main.
