Remember those holidays when you used to get someone else to rub suncream on your back after you’ve pinned the kids down to slather them with factor 50… well this holiday is almost the same, only with Avon so Soft and an extra helping of jungle formula for good measure. Even with the smothering of bug spray, the battle against the midges is real.
This morning more so than ever. We free camped in a forest and woke up to the beautiful sight of the sun rising over the hill and midges EVERYWHERE! We were surrounded. Without even opening the door, we packed up and got out pronto.
Our first destination was the fairy pools which were as magical you’d expect. A glen cascades with a series of gentle waterfalls and collects in numerous translucent pools, each a slightly different shade of blue, green, turquoise and yellow due to the rocks and minerals. They are mesmerising. We didn’t take swim stuff with us (much to Oliver’s disappointment) but did dip our toes in. The water was cold enough that after a few minutes your feet hurt and you needed to get out to warm up a bit. People more organised than us had wetsuits and beach shoes… all things we had with us in the car park. The 3 mile walks takes you up to the end of the cascade and back again. It was enchanting and we loved it.
The next planned stop was the Oyster shed where I was looking forward to getting some lunch. Sadly, the car park was too small for our bus and Andy had to do a 10 point turn to get us out again. Honestly, it’s like he’s been driving busses for ever. We decided not to go to Neist Point lighthouse as the roads in Skye are small and it’s really hilly here. This is the A road. The B roads are single tracks. I dread to think what the white roads are like.
We ended up heading to our campsite, which is situated on the stunning shores of Loch Dunvegan and playing on the rocks by the water, looking for shells. The kids played pirates and Andy and I mostly tried to keep them on the safe side of the rocks. I found a cool crab shell that a baby crab shed. It made it back to the bus but has already been squashed. We got dinner from the food van and I finally got some fish - Muscles and chips and they were delicious. Andy and and kids had “the best” fish and chips of the holiday so far.
Skye is as stunning as everyone says it is. More suitable to cars but Andy said that it’s not that bad driving here so maybe it’s just me. We’ve had to cancel our plans to go see the dinosaur footprints tomorrow though as word is that it’s not a good idea with a big motorhome. Never mind.
Tonight is our most Northerly campsite. Tomorrow we start heading south east and the journey home begins.
