Another awesome day! We headed to the Nevis Range mountain experience, a MTBing Mecca of staggering proportions. It’s where the held the MTB downhill world championship and the bike routes are not for the faint hearted! I felt a bit sick just looking at some of them. Thankfully, our plans were more sedate.
We headed up on the gondola to the viewing point and cafe. At the top there are two view points to choose from. We headed left first, got battered by freezing wind on the way there, admired the snippets of view in the mist, and then got battered by freezing rain on the walk back. This was clearly a good time to stop of lunch at the cafe where the portions were much more geared towards people skiing/cycling/generally being more active than us. After lunch and slightly drier we headed to the second viewpoint. The clouds rolled towards us as we walked. The kids were cold and whiny (mummy left woolly hats and gloves on the bus) and when we got there we were firmly in cloud and surrounded by white as far as the eye could see! We wondered back and as we got the gondola down, the skies started to clear. So annoying! We should have gone up later in the day.
The second half of the day was spent cycling. The lovely people at Nevis cycling managed to fix Oliver’s bike. It’s not completely fixed but will do the job for a little while we hope. Andy, Oliver and Matt went off to explore the more technical forest MTB trails whilst Cheryl and I took the girls for a cycle/run along the fire trails and a short section of the blue trail. The sun was shining and it was a glorious afternoon. So much so that when we got back to the bus we got the chairs out and chilled in the sun with some drinks whilst the kids played. We had hoped to go up on the Gondola again but sadly we missed the last lift which was surprisingly early (4:30pm).
We’ve now said goodbye to Matt, Cheryl and the girls. Tomorrow we head further North to Skye (providing the ferry is running).
