I’m starting to wonder if fairies come from Skye. Having seen the fairy pools yesterday, today we saw the fairy flag and the fairy glen. Maybe it’s because the Isle of Skye is so magically beautiful.
Every direction you travel, you see lochs, mountains and sea. The landscape has a jagged beauty that isn’t matched in many places and today more so as we were finally blessed with some snippets of sunshine. It still rained, obviously, but that’s only because Andy declared that it wasn’t going to rain today. In all, the Isle of Skye is stunning and well worth the trip.
We started the day at Dunvegan castle, the oldest castle in Scotland that’s still inhabited. It was a cool little place with lots of treasures inside (including the fairy flag) and lovely gardens surrounding it. The gardens included a walled garden filled with colourful flowers as well as a water garden with an impressive waterfall. The castle is built on the cliff facing out to Dunvegan Loch and the sea beyond: not a bad view!
Next we drove to the Fairy Glens - our most northerly stop. We knew that the Fairy Glen was located down a single track dead end road so we parked in the nearby town and cycled. The Fairy glens is a collection of miniature mountains, including a miniature lake, and castle Ewan, a protruding rock in the heart. All the little mountains had a swirling pattern on them. It was a cool place and the kids loved scrambling up and down the mounds. We were going to climb castle Ewan but it looked a bit too dangerous considering Oliver’s devil may care attitude and propensity to get too close to edges. I have probably died a thousand deaths on this holiday. Instead we had a great time wondering about exploring and admiring the view across the valley.
Afterwards we headed south and said goodbye to the Isle of Skye, crossing the bridge back to the mainland. Not before seeing more breathtaking views of the stunning island.
There is still so much we didn’t do on the Island. Maybe we’ll return one day.
We’re staying the night in campsite on a Loch (again) with yet more stunning scenery. We went to the beach and had a beer to commemorate my dads birthday whilst the kids played on the rocks (again). Honestly, who needs toys. Our kids seem to be happiest with sticks and boulders… preferably with a terrifying cliff face nearby. Thankfully these rocks were quite tame.
