Phew, caught up again on the blog entries. Yesterday was a real mixed bag of adventures. We decided to go to Cavendish Square (a mall) yesterday morning ... however Gertie (our GPS) had other ideas. I have no idea where she was planning to take us. Thankfully Brett could remember back to when he was here and he managed to figure out we were driving too far into town. He navigated us back to the right spot and we had a wander around the mall. They have the coolest carpark building - above every carpark there is a light which is green if the space is free and red if it has a car parked in it. How handy is that!!
After grabbing some lunch from the supermarket we drove down to the beach. Wasn't exactly swimming weather but it was nice to enjoy some fresh air. Brett thoroughly enjoyed his donut ... as he doesn't get them too often at home because they're usually cooked in animal fat. We decided the view of the mountains could be better so we hopped back in the car and carried on driving, eventually getting to Table View (which is in fact a suburb not a hill like I thought!). We went for a nice walk on the beach, 'enjoying the vista' and watching the kite surfers.
As good tourists though we thought that we must see more ... so off to Rhodes memorial we drove. Upon arrival we were greeted with a few classroom lots of teenagers so we decided to go for a coffee at the restaurant in the hope they'd head back to school. Once the hoards had left we had a wander around the rather grand memorial (see the photos in the Cape Town album) and had a look at the stunning Cape Town view.
About that point we remembered we are pretty old so we went home to relax for a bit before heading out again.
Yes, well, as for last night ... it had its good and not so good moments. Perhaps I'll start with the crappy bits and finish with the good. We managed to miss a turn on the way to the Brauhaus and when you're driving on freeways it takes quite a while to turn around again. Eventually we made it. The crappiest bit of our holiday so far was losing our car. After a fantastic evening at the Brauhaus (I'll come back to that) we headed back to the carpark building. However we took a slightly different route. Hmmm, not the best of ideas. We wandered (speed walked actually) around the streets and went into I don't know how many different car park buildings (one we walked around at least 3 times) and we just could not find the car! What made it a million times worse was the extremely dodgy people on the sides of the road with at least every second one asking for money and getting in your face about it. I think it's the most scared I've ever been. I mentioned to Brett some dodgy guys on the right but he heard it as a guy with a knife, so needless to say he very quickly took me back to the Brauhaus. We rang Nico who came back (he'd only just come home) and picked us up. Within a couple of minutes he'd figured out which way we'd come in and within 5 we'd found the car! What a relief!!!! We were so lucky to have made this mistake now when we do have a rescuer to fall back on! We've made a list of things to do in future to make sure that never happens again. Thanks a million times over Nico!!
Back to happier things now, the evening at the Brauhaus. We met up with Carlo, Ryan & Shaylene, Bushy (Nick), Brenainn & Kirsten and Nico. It was a great evening, meeting Brett's Uni friends and flatmates and finally putting faces with the names that I've heard so many times. We had a nice evening reminiscing over Uni stories and antics and catching up with how people are now.
So all in all (I'm just going to ignore the horrendous end) we had a very good day.
