This weekend we got to experience the violence in South Africa first hand. We witnessed destruction of property, a fight involving a stabbing and multiple drive-by shootings. But apparently it's normal for elephants to pull down trees to eat them, for wildebeest to fight with their horns and for tourists like us to shoot many photos out car windows.
We got up bright and early on Saturday morning and drove up to Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve. Even the drive up was rather eye-opening for Rebecca with lots of unexpected observations on the locals' way of life. As soon as we got through the gates of the game reserve we were met with some impala grazing only a few metres from the road. This was the beginning of two very successful days of driving around seeing lots of animals up close including some enormous elephants and a lion on the prowl. Our new camera was well exercised and we got some amazing photos.
We stayed the night at Hilltop Camp and had a great feed on boerewors and piri piri steak.
Rebecca will write some more tomorrow.
