Brenton Kovacs's Travels
17th
The flight to Oslo is on time, thats a first. I catch the super fast train from the airport to the city, then a short bus ride to my accommodation. My stay in Oslo is in an Apartment not far from the city. I found this place on airbnb, and its cheaper than a hotel with twice the space and a full kitchen.
After quickly unpacking i take a walk to the city centre. There is blue sky, so i must make the most of it. Oslo is not a bustling city but its clean and easy to walk around.
18th
Not so lucky with the weather, its lightly raining. Well a little rain wont stop me. I spend most of the day walking around the Harbour district, then more of the city. Ducking in and out of shops to dry off and warm up.
19th
Another rainy day, but with tomorrow looking much the same i decide to take the metro up into the hills to see the Holmenkollen Ski Jump. Its a very famous ski jump where the Olympic ski jump was held.
Rather than get off at Holmenkollen station, i take the metro to the end of the line, then i can walk 2 kilometres downhill to Holmenkollen. Not the smartest idea. As we climb further up the hill, the cloud cover is thick, and its raining. Well being adventurous i stay with the plan. Its lucky for me there is a sign pointing to the famous restaurant near the metro station. Its the starting point where you pick up the path to walk downhill.
Well with little visibility, a strong breeze, rain and below zero doesnt make for a nice walk. But its a challenge that does not come up that often. Well the dirt paths are frozen, and so is the car park. After 15 harrowing minutes i finally get to the road with slipping on the ice that is everywhere. At least its downhill.
Well i finally make it to the Chapel, but its hard to get any pictures because of the rain and fog. Next stop is the Ski jump, but its all covered in fog. Not to worry,i find a supermarket to buy a bread roll and some smoked salmon for lunch. So there i am sitting out the front of the supermarket, its still raining and below zero, but at least i am dry, cold but dry.
I take the metro home and warm up before going for a walk down to the shopping street near the apartment. Lots of people out walking and a nice atmosphere. It has stopped raining at last.
20th
I woke this morning to the sound of rain on the window. Not another wet day. So a lay in bed a little longer before getting up. Well after showering and breakfast i take another look out of the window, and there is blue sky. Great.
Lets head into the city and then i will take the metro back to the ski jump. Its only a 20 minute ride, and hopefully it wont be shrouded in fog. Well i am lucky this time and i get to see the ski jump. It is one impressive structure. I cannot believe how steep it is. Must be one hell of an adrenalin rush flying off that ramp.
So back home for some well earned food and pack a few things away as its off to Copenhagen tomorrow.
