Brenton Kovacs's Travels
I can sleep in this morning as the bus does not leave till 12.30pm. Had a great stay in Mostar, very likeable little town.
The bus trip to Dubrovnik travels along the coast, and the views are superb. We hug the side of the cliff which plunges straight into the vivid blue ocean. Unfortunately the bus drivers think they are racing car drivers, so there was no obeying any of the speed limits, and the corners were taken fairly fast. Least we arrived alive.
The border crossing held us up for about an hour, with 2 guys being removed from the bus and escorted to the passport control office. Half an hour later they re-boarded the bus.
One day is spent exploring the old city, what a wonderful undamaged old city this is. So well preserved, so clean and yet it feels like you have time travelled back a few hundred years.
I can see why people rave about Dubrovnik, it really is wonderful.
There is a cable car in Dubrovnik that takes you to the top of the mountain. Rather than send !0 euros on the ride i take the long winding rocky path to the top. Boy is it tough going in parts. The view makes it worth ever drop of sweat, even if the sun is hidden by clouds. I take a different route on the way back down that take me through a little village called Bosanka. In 1991/92 it was almost destroyed in the war, but the Croatian army took control and the village was able to be partly rebuilt by the land owners.
Another walk through the old town to see a travel agent, and book a tour of Montenegro. Was going to rent a car, but after doing some sums, it worked out about the same cost, but now i can sit back and enjoy the day.
An early start today, 7am is when the bus picks me up. We pick up more people, then head to Montenegro. The border crossing takes about 15 minutes, then we are on our way to Kotor. The drive along the bay of Kotor is pretty nice, pity about the couds. The old town in Kotor is small and filled with tourists from the cruise ship. I take a walk up the mountain for a better view of Kotor. Next stop is Budva, which again has a small walled old town. No cruise ships here, so its a lot easier to walk the old town. Unfortunately it starts to rain, but it is only light. The route back to Dubrovnik is slightly different, we short cut it with a ferry ride across the bay. Was an enjoyable day with a really informative guide who spoke very good english.
I leave Dubrovnik tonight at 10pm on a ferry to Bari, Italy. It docks at 8am, lucky i managed to find accommodation that allows me to check in at 10am. I have to overnight in Bari as the bus to Sicily happens to leave at 8am, so i have no chance of making that connection.
