Started the day by exploring a collection of buildings we can see from our room. It looked like it might be a tourist spot & is in as far as it was part of old Bergen from the early days that has been restored. It’s mostly shops & artist shops now & I found a couple of watercolor prints done by the shop owner. Dave asked her to sign them & she did! They will be cute framed in a set for our travel wall.
From there, headed off to find the Kode Art Museum, four separate buildings housing Bergen’s collection. They had a surprising number of Picasso’s early works, & in fact was one of the first museums to acquire art from the post- impressionist, modern style back in the 1920’s. One of Norway’s most famous artists is Dahl, who had the ability to add amazing light effects to his work. A special exhibit there now is in ceramics and textile. The ceramic pieces were huge tubes & tray (@ 4’ plus), but the textile were woven with shiny metallic threads into designs. Very cool.
The area outside the museum has a large pond with fountain, bordered with tulips - yellow on one side, red near the entry. Beautiful!
There was a small children’s play area which included a xylophone. We heard some music & there was this older guy playing it. By then, it was 3pm & time for a snack & rest. We also had to check out where to catch the airport bus on Thursday. The hotel serves a really nice light buffet & we make good use of it!
One thing that’s been interesting/disappointing is the lack of sweets on most buffets & even in bakeries. We were expecting some of Dave’s childhood favs like kremekaka - nope, & no lefsa, either! Maybe the Norwegians have gone on a health kick!
