Sun 15/06/14 Kids fed the waterbirds while we finished packup and gave the van a wash....trees here are filled with wattle birds and also drop gumnuts / blossoms, so the roof was in need of external scrubbing after a 10 day stay. Had planned to follow the Indian Ocean Drive up the coast, but somehow the GPS got us onto the Brand Hwy ... roadside lunchstop just past Cataby, then crossed over to Cervantes and got on the coastal road to see The Pinnacles Desert in Nambung National Park. Long day of driving, but well worth the trip......unhitched the van to do the 4.2km drive through the desert where you hop out to wander amongst the pinnacles at your leisure. They are estimated to be 20-30,000 yrs old....some geologlists believe they formed from broken down shell matter / calcium carbonate on the sea bed, others consider they are the fossilised remains of a petrified / burned grass tree forest. Kids tried to "use their shadows to hold them up" and Michael found a particularly big one; see pics. Cervantes free campsite was full, so we headed further up the coast to Jurien Bay Caravan Park on the foreshore for the night.
