Mon 16/06/14 Late start cos I whizzed Lexi to the doctors for a quick checkup to ensure she's recovering from her tummy bug...was given the thumbs up - hooray! Long day driving today - Passed through Dongara - known for its crayfishing, Greenough - saw the Leaning Trees, and Geraldton - much bigger than we expected - had to pick up some spare parts for van and grocery shop here. Continued on to Wagoe Beach, an ocean clifftop farm stay for one night; gorgeous sunset.
Tues 17/06/14 Up early for a 2 hour quad bike ride along the beach and through the sandunes - BEST FUN EVER! Very windy - were advised a storm front was coming in and best be indoors by 3pm. Had the tour to ourselves, so set our own pace - 35km/hr max allowed. The kids took it in turns riding beside our guide, Ashley, in his buggy while others had dinks behind K&M. Rode very close to the shorebreak, which throws up huge sprays due to the rock shelf that drops off to 20mt deep. Saw 4 pods of dolphins (approx 20 in each) fishing in the swirling waves and, after seeing several "blows" we spotted our first whlae - a humpback poked his/her head out of water 1-2mts for 5-10 seconds before gliding back under...very exciting. Next we zoomed around in some monster sanddunes, got a bit sandblasted due to high winds (which just added to the adventure) before heading to the top of the beginning of the Kalbarri Cliffs, which run 20km north up the coast - here we saw remnants of literally one end of the rabbit proof fence - then back to farm.
At the recommendation of Ashley, we moved van into Kalbarri township then went off-bitumen into Kalbarri National Park and did the walk out into the sandstone gorges to see "The Loop" & "Natures Window" rock formation, which is out on a cliff point, so more adventure. Not sure if it was the high winds or the impact of the cliffs that inspired Lukas to give us a Billy Elliot style performance on the return walk; girls nearly wet their pants laughing at him. Threatening storm clouds had us hightailing it back to town to take refuge in the pub for the arvo / evening - unfortunately the heavens opened 5 mins before we arrived, so all of us got drenched going the 10 metres between the car and the pub to get inside! Kids settled in to do their journals which started off well; one glass of raspberry lemonade each & they were up dancing on the stage! Enjoyed a delicious counter meal - Michael claims it to be one of the best tasting seafood platters he's ever had.
