Ben and Marie's American Road Trip
Today, we had another free hotel breakfast, which I was now taking as an excuse to stock up for the day. 4 plates this morning I think. Regular cups of tea was becoming a real treat too. We again got our regular taxi to the station and ticket to New York, with the train busy as ever. It was becoming a routine now, and I was still excited to go to New York, there is so much going on, it's a place we have both said we could easily live in. Today, we were going to be going to Central Park, which was only a short walk from the New York Penn station. Marie had already decided what she needed to see from various movies and to programs, namely Home Alone and Friends. The park was buzzing, people everywhere, bike rickshaws were available to rent but we didn't bother, we bought ourselves a map and set off. Some of the sights from the big rocks you could climb were fantastic, seeing all the hotels surrounding the park. The high rise buildings reminding you that this little oasis was actually in the middle of one of the busiest cities in the world. The bridge and the ice rink were what we came to first, Gapstow bridge being the one featured in home alone, overlooking an idyllic lake below. The sun was out and the weather was gorgeous as the sun rays bounced off the ripples in the water, we really had picked the best day for walking round. The cherry blossom was in full bloom as we walked to the chess area, unfortunately we forgot the set. However, we moved on to the Mall through the centre of the park, where all the portrait artists and stall owners were, surrounded by old, beautifully shaped trees either side of the walkway. It was no wonder it was one of the most photographed spots in the park. This was when we reached the lake, there was a boathouse on the east shore and it was a real picture, you could rent boats and there was even little turtles swimming in amongst them, we sat on the edge just by the fountain and I could've sat there all day watching the world go by. We saw a few couples who had just married and were getting photos in the park and the fountain area was alive with the sound of a local busker. It really was a world away from the busy bustling city. We walked back to broadway via the imagine mosaic, dedicated to John Lennon, and listened to a busker sing, and everyone joined in, it was a peaceful moment. We walked from broadway to the Nintendo Store, where I wanted a souvenir and ended up buying Pokemon cards, more things to bring back. We then went to Planet Hollywood for some drinks and dinner. The place was awesome, it had cars coming out the walls, movie props and outfits from ghostbusters and terminator and the music was great too. I had a burger and a few beers and Marie had a few cocktails and some pasta, a really nice evening, and the waitress even gave me a free drink!! Afterwards we headed back via Times Square, which looked even more magical at night, and got on the train home. More detective and murder case programs before bed, they'd become quite the necessity.
