Ben and Marie's American Road Trip
After staying another night in the Springfield KOA we had stayed in before, we set off to head back towards Chicago to go to some of the things on Route 66 that we missed. We left via the diversion again, and headed towards Chicago again. We would be stopping short of Chicago to see the Gemini Giant, one of the Route's muffler men, huge fibreglass statues. This was at the Launchpad Diner, now up for sale, which was the best part of 3 hours away, and then we would work back towards Springfield again. We arrived there, after a brief stop at a rest area dedicated to Route 66 and found the Gemini Giant looming over the car park. We met some other tourists there, who amazingly were from the UK and originally from Suffolk. Small world. Anyway, we then followed the route again and took a few pictures as we had time to stop this time. We met up with the folks we saw at the diner again at the old gas station we drove to, a short way down the route. We had a photo with the Texaco man at that gas station, dressed in his uniform, and he was none too happy I picked up the gas pump. We stopped in again to see Henry at the rabbit ranch, and Connor had become Hubert, but he was still just as cute. We also went to a museum along the route in Pontiac, which had an army museum, Route 66 museum and also had Bob Waldmire's "house" in it, which was fascinating, considering he just travelled up and down 66 in his camper van or truck, both used as mobile homes. He was actually the inspiration for Filmore on Cars, but terms to use the name Waldmire couldn't be agreed, hence Filmore. After that we travelled to Dixie Diner, famous on the route for many years. They are open 24/7 and claim that because of that, they have buried the front door key under cement at the front door. We had a buffet in there for tea and it was amazing, the first vegetables I had had for many days. Shocking. After eating for too much broccoli, green beans and mash, we left to find the Bunyan Giant, at Atlanta, a few minutes from Dixie, and that was our last stop before back to camp. So overfilled and tired from the travelling, we went to sleep ready for our drive South again tomorrow.
