Tonight we would be staying at the Route 66 famous Wig wam Motel in Holbrook, having done the petrified forest in the previous 2 days, we had some time to kill. So today we decided we would drive to Winslow on Route 66, and see some of the stops today so we wouldn't have to when we left tomorrow. We set off and went to the stop that inspired Henrys rabbit ranch, and also the Geronimo Trading Post. We signed the books as we have done in many of the stops we have been to, doing the date the correct way round, no matter what the Americans say. In the Geronimo trading post we found the first souvenir with Marie's name on it, it had taken over a month but we found one, and so we felt we should buy that. Obviously the Manchester attacks had been in the last few days so that was all over even the American radio. Many Americans were wishing us their best, which was lovely of them. Once we got into Winslow we drove through the historic quarter with all the old buildings and the standin' on the corner crossroads mentioned in the song by the eagles. There were 3 gift shops and a huge Route 66 shield on the crossroads there, we had a browse and then set off a short way down the road to the 9/11 memorial. I got out to pay my respects and saw that they had two of the steel girders there from the actual building. Plus there was a plaque dedicated to the old Winslow bridge that is now non existent. Once it got to around 3, we set off back to Holbrook so that we could check in to the hotel. We were very excited, especially as this place was the inspiration for the Cozy Cone Motel in Cars. We were beginning to see just how big the film was for Route 66. We got to the Motel and the rooms were brilliant, literally triangle shaped with sloping walls, the showers were tiny, but very cute and they had classic cars parked outside every room too. We decided we would have some dinner in the room and make the most of it, so we got Pizza Hut and sat and watched a film, it was nice to relax after all the hiking in the past few days. After that, we went to sleep to refuel for tomorrow.
