Today we were heading towards Flagstaff, further West on the Route 66 trail, we would be going through Winslow again and on towards the Grand Canyon. We got up from the Motel and got our things together ready to leave. We kept to the interstate to start with because we did Route 66 to Winslow yesterday. However, today we would be hitting Route 66 after Winslow, which meant going to the Meteor City Trading Post, which was now merely a shell basically. Totally abandoned and totally derelict, with the huge painted signs and tee pee being the only things left as a reminder of its former glory. Shortly after that, is the Meteor crater after which the Trading post was named, its the most well preserved example of a crater on earth, according to them. We walked around the information centre and had a look at a movie about the impact itself. It caused huge amounts of rock displacement and the impact itself was like that of a huge amount of bombs exploding at once. We walked to the edge of the crater and went a slight way down into it, it was vast, their were telescopes around the edge centred on parts of interest too. Unfortunately we weren't allowed in the crater but it was still a lot of fun. Then we moved on and headed to flagstaff, the drive wasn't majorly long so that was good, and we were staying at a KOA so keen for that too. Once we arrived, we got the tent set up and then made our way to the university to see the 4th muffler man of Route 66. This was the axe wielding lumberjack Giant. We took our photos and then visited the mall over the road from the KOA to have a late evening browse. After that we had a McDonald's for dinner and went back to camp to get some shut eye. Grand Canyon tomorrow.
