Ben and Marie's American Road Trip
This part of the petrified forest was the part with the actual forest in it, or petrified forest, and those two things look very different. We were seeing the parts of the petrified forest today, that we hadn't yet seen, so the second half basically. We had unlimited pancakes for breakfast, offered by our campsite, they were very nice too. All you can eat for $3, including coffee. So we had that and then we set off. We were heading down the road to Winslow first to go to Walmart, so we could get a candle in honour of Marie's grandad. After that, we went to McDonald's to use the wifi to FaceTime Marie's family. More particularly here dad as it was his birthday. We chatted to them for an hour or so and then made our way to the petrified forest again. We were first going to the agate bridge, a huge fallen petrified log. It had been stabilised by concrete underneath, but it was huge, although it is destined to fall at some point, water and freezing will eventually cause its collapse. We also got to an area where you could walk down into the canyon and see some of the painted desert cliff faces with different coloured layers. There were purple and blue cliff faces mixed with red and white making it a layered pattern almost. Then we walked through a massive area of petrified wood, which was once a forest and had crystallised in silt and after millions of years of erosion it had once again come to the surface. There was so much of it, and judging by the prices in the shops, I'd imagine a lot of money's worth too. We walked a 2 mile hike around the forest with no actual trees, more like a rock forest, made of trees, or what used to be trees. Complicated. After that, we went to the museum and had a look at some old dinosaur fossils and did a little archaeological dig with some brushes, but I'm pretty sure that was for the kids. We did another little hike around the museum seeing some of the stacks of petrified wood and then we set off back to camp, pretty tired from our 6 miles hiking. Especially considering it was 26 degrees. We went for a Burger King and took it back to camp, ate that and then lit the candle for Marie's grandad. All before having a few drinks in the moonlight. A lovely day.
