We all slept most of the way on the plane, Lloyd literally fell asleep before take-off and woke up when we landed, only a two hour flight this time though. The first thing we noticed when getting off the plane in Vietnam was how cold it was, still warmer than England so don't get to excited but compared to Singapore and Hong Kong it was a bit nippy!
We had to get an hour long bus to the city centre, this is when we first noticed how mental the roads are, never seen so many motorbikes and mopeds in our lives. It is CRAZY! They go where they want when they want, on the paths, the wrong way down the road, anything! We got chatting to a local who spoke really good English who was our age. He answered a few of the questions we had like, 'how do we know when to get off this bus?' and 'why do so many people have motorbikes?' Very nice bloke, just got back from a holiday in Bangkok.
We walked around for ages trying to find our hostel, in the end we found it, checked in, got rid of our bags, and went to find some much needed food. There are loads of places to get street food but we were starving and so tired we didn't risk street food on our first night. So we just found a normal restaurant, cheapest meal of the trip so far, £8 and £1 for the local beer, this is one of the most expensive places in Hanoi as well! Oh yeah by the way we are millionaires now, £1 is 34000 Vietnamese Dong!
After an early night and a massive lay in we were back to our normal spritely selves. Today the plan was to sort out a trip to Halong Bay, and our sleeper bus travelling south down the country! After sorting this out and booking a better hostel for the rest of our stay in Hanoi, we stumbled across an old Prison, now museum. It cost us about 30p to get in. It was very interesting, those prisoners had it hard, on average around 40 inmates died a month! It was open until around the 70s, and held the American pilots, who's planes were shot down when America invaded Vietnam! The got treated a lot better than the Vietnamese and were all released when the war was over.
We're going to a rooftop bar tonight, on top of our next hostel for a couple of beers and socialise for a bit. We have an early morning tomorrow to catch our coach for our trip to Halong Bay.
