It took 5 hours to get from Vang Vieng to Luang Prabang on a minibus that cost us the equivalent of £6. The journey was very bumpy and winding as we went through the mountains where the roads are mainly just dusty and stoney. The driver had to drive around fallen rocks very often, and there were shear drops either side, but we got there safe and sound.
As we arrived in Luang Prabang you could tell this was a quieter place than Vang Vieng, and after checking into our hostel we got some lunch. We then had a walk around the town when Tim decided it was time he needed a haircut. After being pointed in the wrong direction a few times, we finally found a guy in a small wooden shack shaving someone's hair. As this seemed to be the only place around Tim decided to brave it and get his hair done. We sat and watched him finish the other guys hair, and it looked a bit dodgy but Tim thought 'oh well'. He sat down nervously and tried to explain to the guy that he just wanted the sides and back cut and blended in…. wasn't as easy as just saying 'the usual' to Dawn!
The guy seemed very happy Tim was using him to cut his hair and really took his time and put in a lot of effort. His technique seemed very inaccurate but seemed to work! He must of thought Tim's patchy beard was awful ( probably right ) and shaved that off without asking too. In the end the cut turned out ok and he even finished off by cracking Tim's neck and giving him a quick shoulder massage. All in all the haircut cost less than £2…but Tim tipped him some extra too.
That night we went for dinner in an Aussie bar, which was really nice then headed to do what every traveller does at night in Luang Prabang…bowling!!! Everything in this town shuts at 11pm except the bowling alley, so everyone goes there as it is the only place to keep drinking. At first everyone heads to a bar called Utopia, which is really chilled out. You sit on cushions and mats on the floor, whilst music plays and a large projector screen is on in the background with funny 'You've Been Framed' type videos playing.
Straight away we bumped into an English lad called James we had met a couple nights ago in Vang Vieng, and sat with him and a load of other people from all over. After a few drinks and the bar closing at 11…everyone piles into Tuk Tuks and heads to bowling. The Tuk Tuk drivers cram as many as they can in, with some people even hanging off the back. We had gone to the cashpoint though, so when we came back most people had left so we didn't need to squeeze in one.
The bowling is really surreal. You walk in and there are around 20 lanes on the right hand side, a small counter selling whole bottles of whisky, vodka and beer on the left… and that is it. It is really basic and bright, with all of the lights turned on, and no music playing…. But everyone is smashed! Every single person in there is a traveller…and we got a lane with a girl from Ipswich and two American girls. It was a really good night, and a bit different from the normal bars and clubs. We got another Tuk Tuk home and got some sleep ready for an early wake up this next day…
