We knew we would be waking up with a bit of a hangover the next day so we planned to spend the whole day catching rays on the beach. We saw an advert the day before about a fishing trip and we all fancied it but we didn't really get round to booking it. Then a rep came up to our beds on the beach selling a fishing, snorkelling and island visit trip the next day. We haggled him down from $70 to $60 so it worked out $20 each. We organised for him to pick us up at 10 the next morning and it was sorted.
We went out for a few drinks that night but not as many as the first night so we could get up fresh for the trip. He was right on time outside the hostel and he took us to the pier and put us on our boat. We had the whole boat to ourselves (and the driver), which we thought was cool as all the other boats that are about that were the same size as ours were full of people. We set off to the first area where we were to go snorkelling. Just before we jumped in the bloke (whos name we don't really know as we couldn't pronounce it) said 'watch out for the sea urchin.' So we all jumped in and started looking around the coral, we saw a few different kinds of fish the coolest being, some black and white stripey ones, we called them zebra fish as it just made sense. As we moved further into the coral, we realised why he warned us about the sea urchin! None of us had ever seen them bigger than tennisball size, but these were like bigger than basketballs, there was no way we were getting anywhere near them.
After the first snorkelling session he took us to another area to fish, we had a rod each using squid as bait, we had a few nibbles at the start but nothing major then the bloke caught a couple which built our hopes up. Ben and Tim then caught two fish, Tim with the biggest of the day. Lloyd caught sod all, which he pretended to not care about but Ben and Tim know him well enough to know that it really annoyed him!
We then got dropped off on a tiny island called Bamboo Island where we had lunch and chilled on the beach and in the sea for a bit. After that we were taken to the coast of another island to snorkel again. It was more of the same, big coral big urchin and a few fish. There were a few other boats around this time and a girl on one of the other boats hit a sea urchin, she was quite far away but it looked like she was in a lot of pain. A local man was giving her some treatment but from where we were standing it just looked like he was hitting her leg with something. We were then taken back to Sihanoukville, where we thanked our driver for the day. Was well worth $20. We just went out for dinner that night and got an early night as we wanted to make the most of Koh Rong the next day. We did get up at 3am to watch the England game though…. Then went back to sleep after.
