Our final ancient Thai city. First we arrived in Pitsanulok on the train and we planned to stay here as the books said Sukhothai itself was a bit dull.
We found a room that looked great, cheap and big windows so we could see out...big mistake! By the time we woke up next morning we were overcooked with the heat! So we decided it would be better to be closer to what we came to see and moved to Sukhothai.
We found a small guest house called TR which was brilliant. The rooms were clean, small and simple but had a big comfy bed and the owner was by far the nicest person we've met out here. To top it all off as well it had good food, free internet and the cutest tiny little dog!
First day we just chilled out and met some of the local residents - Klaus and Billy. Two old sailors who are enjoying their golden years on their war pensions in Thailand. But the seconf\d day we got down to business and set off to see more temples. By now you're probably as bored of reading about them and looking at the pictures as we are of seeing them, but to be honest these one's were quite impressive. We caught the bus there and got bikes and just cycled round the park - that was huge across main roads and all. Apart from looking at the pretty ruins the only real enetertaining moment was the thai/french man who approached us whilst we admired a buddha statue. After trying to offer to take our photo (of course we're going to give the camera to the wierd thai man) he hugged us and kissed us on both cheeks, whilst calling me madame. Don't think he was dangerous just a bit of a fruit loop as he appeared to be doing this to everyone he met. After a hard days sight seeing we discovered that a lot of the ruisn were lit up at night, and as we haven't had quite enough temples for one trip we decided to come back and see that the next night, although this meant renting another moped!
Anyways on the way home with Tasha in tow we stopped off at the only bar/ eatery reccomended in the lonely plant book - Chopper. Chopper appears to be quite a strong man although somewhat effeminate - he was wearing a pink skirt and heels! By far the butchest lady-boy in Thailand.
The following evening we got the moped (a very nice one that was the owners and not normally up for rent) and set off in the dark along the highway. The ruins again as you can see by pictures were lovely lit up by night, we also got to see some of the lesser visited attractions on the outskirts of the park including one we had to hike up a weird stone path up a hill but it was beautiful and worth the effort. After visiting the main bits we set off as the park was very eerie in the dark so we didn't hang about too long and the lady we got the bike from was very relieved to have her moped back.
The last day we set off for Chiang Mai by bus and the really nice guest house owner drove us back to the bus station which is a first, he was so friendly!
(Sorry this one is a bit vague - we have been lazy in tyoping things up and have forgotten quite a bit of it - but Sukhothai was really nice!)
Hope all is well at home, thank you again for your messages!
