Retired & Traveling
Neither Rich nor I slept well at all--mainly because we were both so afraid we would miss hearing the doorbell. He got up at 2:00 a.m. and took a shower, came back to bed and told me he'd washed away all his worries! :)) It must've worked because we both fell asleep and didn't wake up until 7:00 am.
We had to be out the door by 9:00, and choosing what I was going to wear wasn't that difficult since I had no options! (Little did I know that I would be wearing the same clothes for three days when I got dressed the morning we left Houston!!) We caught the local bus and managed to find our tour guide without one wrong turn. :))
We were taking a four hour Food Tour that we booked through Viator. There were 13 in our group and it was another gorgeous day! Our guide, Maria, started us off in a popular market place. We nibbled on various bite sized cheeses, then some crackers with mustard (which sounds awful but was actually very tasty) apple wine, some licorice (which the Danes love), a pastry type cracker topped with raspberry strawberry rhubarb jam followed by a shot of 80 proof something--all I know is it took my breath away! The Danes make apple wine because they can grow many different varieties of apples, and it was quite good.
Next was an open faced sandwich shop that gave us a sampling of 4 different treats, all really good. This was a "take-away" place, which is what the Scandinavians say instead of "to-go." However, since we were a group, they had a table set up for us. We left the sandwich shop and walked along one of the canals, enjoying the gorgeous weather. A brewery was next and we got to sample 3 different beers, starting with a Pilsner and working our way up to "the Prince of Darkness is a Gentleman" stout. I liked the pilsner and Mike liked the stout best, so he got all of ours. :))
All along the way between places, our guide would tell us some of the history of the food, the city and the people. She said that by 2025, the government is hoping to eliminate the use of cars within the city limits and they now charge 180% tax on vehicles!! No wonder there are so many bicycles!!
I thought we were done with the eating, but not so--next was a hot dog, because the Danes love their wieners! LOL The stand we visited was one where you could order the meat of your dog, the toppings and the bun. I chose the standard beef (see photo), and after eating most of it, I was about to pop!!
A candy store was next on the agenda that has been making the very same kind of candy for over 124 years--I guess they live by the adage, if it ain't broke, don't fix it! :)) The pictures show all the different flavors that they offer.
Our tour ended with some fabulous chocolate layered thing that looked like a truffle--and it just melted in your mouth.
I had accidentally left our next tour information paperwork at the apt, so we caught the bus and headed back. Found it and left again for the Hop on Hop off tour. We snagged a top row seat and rode around the city enjoying the sights. We didn't get off other than Pam to take a quick picture of The Little Mermaid. We were all too full and feeling a bit of our jet lag at this point, I think.
Mike said we walked over 14,000 steps again today (he was wearing a Fit Bit) and my hip feels like it! So dinner was a pizza place right across from our apt. And it served a dual purpose, too, because we had been told that our luggage had been located and was being delivered--AND IT WAS!!! I haven't been as happy over an object as I was to see that suitcase in a long time! I wanted to give it a hug! My pillow! My fan! New clothes!! It's been a great day! :))

Elisa Reid Beth, I really like open faced sandwiches!! Ate them for almost 5 years when we lived in Norway. You use a knife and fork and there are tons of yummy toppings for them :) So glad your luggage came before you had to get on the boat!!!!
Kathi Hybart I'm so glad your luggage finally arrived! Wonder if we'll see that blouse again on this trip :))
Sylinda Rawlins Those open face sandwiches look amazing! We should start that trend here... less carbs! LOL
